One year update

I had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy a year ago without a single problem or complication. I didn't exercise (bad I know, but I will start) and have pretty much stuck to the general diet of the program, with the occasional slice of pizza or bite of pasta. Eating out is no problem; the leftover other half is lunch. Most places have some form of fish, chicken, beef and a vegetable.

At 331 pounds where I started, I barely fit in size 28 jeans and a 3x top. Now I'm wearing size 22 jeans, and a 1x top it's a lot easier to breathe, walk, and I have more energy. I know I will lose more slowly now but I will keep going. Maybe one day I can be size 16. That would be fine by me.

I'm glad I did it, and I would do it again.

  2. that is some great progress! Remember its not the destination but the journey! Sometimes I get hung up on stressing about the number on the scale and wanting it to go down quicker, but its going. :)

  3. Wow, I started out at 332 as well, and I hadn't been feeling as though I did my sugery justice. You get so caught up in the "goal" you lose sight of what you have accomplished.

And I say you have accomplished a lot!

  6. Can I ask -- what size sleeve did they give you? I'm 4 weeks out (32 french bougie) and can't imagine eating much of anything again. It's freaking me out so much. I don't know how I will get in 70g of protein for the rest of my life on solid food with this tiny stomach!! :-(

  8. Hello, I'm writing from France and I have just discovered your blog which I find really helpful. My Hubby is getting a sleeve this week, and I've been desperate to find a few recipes other than pureed carrots for when he can start eating pureed food. Thank you so much for your great recipes. I hope your weight loss will go on until you reach that size 16.

  9. I know this post is old but I wanted to say I hope that you are still going strong. My husband is about 9 days out from his gastric sleeve surgery. We are excited and nervous. We are also writing a blog ( http://jimmys-gastric-sleeve.blogspot.com ) to chronicle our journey. Wishing you all the best.

Going through a gastric sleeve mexico surgery poses some risks that must be considered first. Much like any other major surgery, there are risks that come along with it. Some of the potential gastric sleeve risks and complications include cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, and some types of cancer.

    1. I had to laugh at your comment and am not sure where you sourced the information from. I guess the funniest part about your comment and ironically, is that if many of these people (myself included) don't have this surgery, we are almost guaranteed to get one of your listed CVD, arthritis, diabetes, cancer (especially bowel) and many other comorbidities. Actually the complications can include a leak or risk of infection (these are the two biggest risks) but most people are willing to take this risk as they want quality of life.

  15. ...to date I have gone from a size 26/28 to an 18 and lost 122 pounds. I feel stronger now than I did a year ago although I had a set back in February with a heart attack. I know I would not have survived had I not lost the weight. My team of Dr.'s are taking great care of me and I look forward to another year, God willing. Thanks for you post!!!!

  19. This blog has helped me adjust my view. I am one year post sleeve. Gone from 287lbs and a size 20 to 204 and a size 12. But I am torturing myself bc the weight loss has slowed. Literally in a mad panic. But reading this has helped me re-examine what I am doing for myself. What is also strange is dealing with peoples reaction to YOU. I love how people are constantly looking to see if there is a weight gain or loss... or the crazy things people blurt out like "You are not flabby!" OMG what do you say to that -- "Thank You" But I have to remember this is marathon and not a sprint. Life is good and I need to take a step back and savor the moment. This was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. Super grateful.

  21. I am a laborer and do not earn much. I needed a gastric bypass surgery done but the prices of most of the hospitals were very high. But when I heard of the gastric bypass prices at your hospital I saw some light. They were very much in my reach. I went for the surgery at your hospital and it was successful. Thanks a lot.

I cant really find foods that I enjoy or really desire.. I'm keeping high hopes though, because I have a wedding dress to get into in a couple months!

  24. A low price does not indicate your surgeon is less skilled than a higher priced surgeon. Many times the cost of the surgery is set by the hospital and the surgeon can choose to take advantage of that pricing or increase his/her price. Some surgeons prefer to offer their patients the lowest possible price because they feel this brings in more patients and the increased number of patients offsets any loss in price per case.
